FACES OF FAITH

SHE SAID 'NO'

ESTHER 1:1-12 (The Message)

Having the bravery and confidence to stand up to an inappropriate request from a superior is both paramount to the moral foundation of society and extemely difficult. We each know deep down when we are doing right or wrong. Our decisions can influence others, too.

A DESCENDANT OF DEBORAH

JUDGES 4:4-9 (The Message)

Having the bravery and confidence to stand up to an inappropriate request from a superior is both paramount to the moral foundation of society and extemely difficult. We each know deep down when we are doing right or wrong. Our decisions can influence others, too.

NECESSARY LIES

EXODUS 1: 8-21 (The Message)

Pharoah had a clever plan. In an attempt to obliterate the Hebrews in Egypt, he enlists midwives to pull a quick-handed maneuver by smothing any male Heberw baby seconds after birth, causing their mothers to believe they were stillborn. Instead, Shiphrah and Puah, two gutsy women, throw a wrench into his plans.

WHEN WE GET SCARED

MATTHEW 26:1-5, 14-16, 47B - 50)

Judas represents those who are afraid to stand up against the pwerful. He allows fear to move him. THE PATH OF RECONCILIATION

PHILEMON 1:1-21

Paul wrote these words to Philemon, a "dear friend and co-worker" about Philemon's runaway slave, Onesimus. In what ways are we like Philemon, ignoring social change that we could help enact? In what ways can we be like Paul, bending the social arc of our society, step by step, toward equality and justice for all? What is required for reconciliation?

NOTHING HOLDS HIM BACK

ACTS 8:26-39

The eunuch moves from questioning to a sense of awe, excitement, wonder and maybe even a bit of certainy. "Look, there is water! What is to keep me from being baptized?" The answer is nothing -- not his status, not his questionsing, not even his position in society as a sexual minority.

A LONG-AWAITED HOLY ENCOUNTER

LUKE 2:21-38

Luke could easily have left Anna out of the story; Simeon had already declared the Messiah was present. But she leans in from the margins, the shadows, the edges of the scene to approach her newborn king. After all, she had been waiting for 84 years to experience this moment.

MAKING TIME FOR GOD

ACTS 16:11-16

As the only Philippian convert named in Acts, Lydia was possibly the leader and patron of the Philippian church. She used her wealth to establish the community, she took time from her busy life to worship and listen to God. Her openess to hearing from God led to conversion by Paul.
